Diary Entry I: On the Eve of the Revolution
May 7th, 1789
It was just another typical day. I woke up, and completed the usual morning cleaning and cooking in the monastery and completed my early prayers. The weather was just perfect! There was no special reason for this amount of joy. I think it was the perfect weather, and the beautiful and natural surrounding around the church. As I was enjoying the beautiful weather, I couldn't help but notice the nun's talking about something. It was impossible to ignore their conversation because it honestly seemed like they were having a huge debate on something. I smiled and walked towards the nuns, and asked them what they are talking about. One of the nun said that there has been a massive shortage of food for the third estate citizens due to not enough food production! I felt bad for those people because I have been reciveing a consistant amount of food in the nunnery and the monastery. I just imagined how cruel and difficult life would be without having enough food to eat. After my job in the monastery was completed, I remembered how I haven't been out side the nunnery and monastery recently. I was also very curious to see the situation in the city. I also thought it would be a good idea if I sneaked some food to share with the people. After giving some thoughts, I came up with a final decision to head out to the city.
It was a pretty far distance from the monastery to the city, but my curiosity shortened the distance. When I first arrived, I could not recognize the place! Despite the wonderful weather, people looked depressed and angry. I could only see boney children. It was sad how I couldn't see their innocent and pure smiles. I saw many people that looked sick. Suddenly, I was motivated to help them. I've also received education on medicine, and I knew what I could do to help them. Then, I spotted a mother, carrying a pale child. I could tell from far that the child hasn't been receiving proper nutrients. I ran towards the mother, and told her that I could help. Then, she desperately said thank you as I examined the child. I was not aware that this town was living like this. Not needing much examination, this child was suffering from lack of nutrients. I advised the mother to at least provide him water, and give him any food that she could find. Then, I quickly grabbed some of the food that I brought and handed it to the small boy. In the second I grabbed some food from my bag, I felt many hungry eyes, piercing through the small bag of food. Before I could even notice, children approached me and asked for food. Without a doubt, I handed each child an equal amount of food. Although it was a tiny amount of food, the children's faces were filled with satisfaction and joy. I felt upset at the fact that these children that were supposed to play around and enjoy their children were suffering from not receiving their basic needs.
After I helped some children that need urgent medical attention, I walked, observing the depressing changes of this town. Then, I saw groups of boney people. They were screaming. Then I asked one women what was going on. Then I saw the mother of the boy that I helped. She came over and polity thanked me. Then, out of curiosity, I asked her what was going on. The mother stated that people are furious at Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. She added that the king as been ruling poorly, and made the lives of the people miserable. Later on, she also said that she heard a rumor that people are going to start an attack to execute Louis XVI, and his weak rule. After I obtained the information, everything seemed more clear. Before I could think even further, I spotted a young wounded man. He stated that his name was Louis-Francois Cartier. I walked towards him and told him that I could provide him medical care. Then I asked him why he was so badly wounded. After his urgent medical care was completed, he explained to me that he was wounded from the massacre. Then he added that his life has been so hard as he belonged in the 3rd estate. He expressed his anger towards the upper estate and after he received basic medical care, he thanked me. Before I could respond, he was gone.
There was a countless amount of wounded people. Seeing these people built my urge to help them. I was clearly not satisfied with helping a few people. Then I imagined how hard life would be for them. However, I realized it was already time for my next prayer. I decided to end my journey for today. But I knew I wasn't done with helping. However, I was very curious about the future of the town. As I was heading back to the monastery for my next prayer, I decided that I would do something like providing medical care, bring food, and spreading awareness to help the children and the people of this town until the political power has been changed.
Diary Entry II: The Radical Period
January 21,1793
Few years has passed. I was very engaged in helping others living in downtown of Neuilly. Honestly, for the past few years, I shared much effort to aid the situation that the people of France are facing. However, I still continue to see the people struggling due to shortage of food, taxes and inferior economy. Seeing the people of the third estate struggling and expressing anger towards the second and first estate made me feel guilty. After I completed my daily tasks and prayers in the monastery, I started to head down to the town. While I was walking, I remembered how I haven't visited my parents for a long time. A part of me was afraid to see my parents being disrespected as they belonged in the first estate. Over the years, the hatred towards the first and second estate among the people of third estate has grown. However, no matter what classes they were in, I still loved my parents. I knew that they didn't do anything wrong and I believed I should explain to them the situation of the people in the third estate. After some thoughts, I decided to visit my parents before I went to help the people.
Sooner or later, I arrived infront of my childhood home. It was still fancy as ever. I awkwardly knocked on the door. In few seconds, the door opened. Then I saw a
skinny girl with thin brown hair. I gave her a smile and said hello. She still had a young look on her face but I didn't see much joy in her face. I asked her what her name was. Then, she whispered her name, Anaïs. I could tell that she was young than me. After she finished observing me, she quietly asked me who I was. Then I answered to her by telling her that I was the daughter of the Moreau family.
Her eyes changed after I told her that I was the daughter of the Moreau family. Somehow, the way she looked at me changed. Then she asked me to enter the house. Although this house was my childhood home, it felt different. As I was walking, I kept thinking that I was a very lucky person. Then, I saw my mother and father. They were please to see me. My mother asked Anais to get tea and food. I could see that my parents missed seeing me. After Anais got us some tea and food, we had a long talk about how we have been. Then, I explained her the situation in the third estate. I told them about the boney people, sick children, and the misery the people are living in. Then, my parents surprisingly told me that they knew what was going on. My father explained to me about the French Revolution. He stated that the people are furious as the first estate. Later on, he added that there has been much debate on the execution of Louis XIV and his wife. He also told me that the execution will take place today. I was very shocked to hear. Although I knew that people hated the king and his wife, I didn't know that it would reach to a point that an execution would take place. Then, I advised my father to do something to help the third estate. I warned him that the people of the third estate are furious at the first estate, therefore could threaten the life of mother and him. After a long discussion with my parents, I realized it was time to go help the people. Then, I told my parents good bye. As I was heading out of my childhood home, surprisingly, Anais asked me if she could join me in helping the third estate. I immediately told her that she could. Then, we walked towards the center of Nueilly where there are many injured people. However, the center that was also busy was very silent. Everyone was gone. Then, I remembered that today was the execution of the king, Louis XIV. I asked Anais if she wanted to go see the exexution with me. She agreed to go with me.
After walking, we arrived to the execution of Louis XIV. By the time we arrived, the execution had already taken in place. Many people were cheering and looked very happy. I haven't seen the people of the third estate this happy. I could see freedom and happiness in their faces. At the same time, I could see many wounded. Although Louis XIV was executed, at the same time it cost lots of lives. There were many wars and massacres. Although I couldn't predict what was going to happen to France, I think the execution will open France to something new. After Anais and I cured some badly wounded people. They were expressing they excitement and was glad for new hope of a better life. Then, I thanked Anais for helping me, and went back towards the monastery.
Diary Entry III: The Directory and the Rise of Napoleon
Nivôse 11th of the year 17
I woke up. It does not feel the same anymore. Since my last journal entry, many changes have occurred. After the execution of Louis XVI, the government has changed. I dedicated a lot of my time in aiding the injured people of Nueilly. At the same time, I developed a interest in politics ever since new debates on who the next government would be kept growing. Surprisingly, the church had lost much power. People now have the freedom of worship. It was a big impact on me. As a nun, I did not know how to react to the people that did not have faith in church anymore. They have gone through too much to be able to worship the church. The church authorities lost a lot of land, and therefore, could not collect anymore unfair tax from the commoners. The church lost power overall. New political structures has been built to prevent dictatorship. Speaking of dictatorship, few years ago, the citizens of France were going through a horrible time period when Maximillien Robespierre was in rule. Ever since his execution, France has finally met peace.
Although I was happy that the wars were over, I have lost much power too. However, I was glad that I was kept alive because there were nun's that were executed. In addition, people are now equal .The situation of France is not very great yet, but the gory and violent part of the revolution has passed on. Although many lives were scarified, I have to say, the revolution has occurred. Now, there is a new leader, Napoleon. I don't know much about the new ruler, but I do have faith in him. He reopened the church and many people believe that he is a wiser ruler than Louis XVI. He has shown much effort to dismiss the corrupt officials and made attempts for a steady economy. I really hoped that he would be a successful leader.
However, despite the fact that Napoleon has accomplished many things, there has been many battles. The purpose of his battles were to conquer the areas in Europe to receive more natural resources. He wanted to help the economy by receiving more resources. However, it also resulted in my injured people. Despite the changes of government and the system of France, my daily life hasn't changed much. I still continue to aid the society by providing medical care to those that were injured when they risked their life. However, I also go around to promote people to worship the church again. I felt upset as i saw the empty seats in the church. My goal was to try anything I could to make people sit on those seats and believe in god, and to regain the respect of the church. The church officials has lost much power, but I didn't think people should stop believing in god.
After my jobs in the monastery was completed, I headed down to Neuilly. It wasn't very beautiful because it was still on the stage of recovery. As I was walking down from the monastery I realized I had a appointment to fix my cloths. I decided to stop buy the taylor's store to get my clothing fixed. After a decent amount of walking, I arrived to the city of Neuilly. Then I entered a clothing store and saw a tailor. He looked like a fine young gentleman. I greeted him and I asked him what his name was. He replied and said that his name was Alain Berdugo. Then, out of curiosity, I asked him what his religion was. As the question came out of my mouth, I was worried that he lost faith in god. Thankfully, he stated that his religion was roman catholic. Then he stated that people have lost faith in the church and the religious authorities, but did not doubt god. He also added that no matter what happens, he would believe in god. After I heard him say that, I gained more hope. I was also comforted and joyful. After having a delightful conversation, I returned to the nunnery to give my prayers. I was determined to regain the trust that the church authorities has lost. God was not fully forgotten.
